Le Grand Concours – is an annual competition sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French. Students of French in grades 1-12 in all 50 states compete against each other for national and state recognition and several $500 scholarship prizes. Grades 1-6 compete in the FLES contest, and grades 7-12 compete in the National French Examination. More than 100,000 students take a written test and scores are ranked against students with similar educational backgrounds. Forty TJ students in grade 3 and 8-12 participated in this competition last year.
The National Spanish Exam -- More than 140,000 students worldwide take a 90-minute comprehensive exam covering the areas of vocabulary, grammar, reading and listening. The exam is sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. (AATPS)
To achieve a gold medal, students score in the top 5 percent of their level. Silver and Bronze medals are awarded for the top 15 and 25 percent, respectively.
In addition to the National French and Spanish Exams, TJ students also successfully compete in the National Latin Exam competition each year.In April, TJ French and Spanish language students in grades 8-12 participate in the events of the Foreign Language Field Day sponsored by MSSU. More than 1,000 students in Missouri schools compete in a variety of areas designed to stimulate and promote interest in foreign language learning: vocabulary recognition, reading comprehension, poetry recitation, skits, geography and culture bowl.
